What to Expect at Your First Improv Class in Scottsdale

So you’ve decided to try it. Here’s exactly what your first class at The Outcasters looks like, start to finish, so you can walk in without any surprises.

Before class

You don’t need to prepare anything. No monologue, no material, no research into improv terminology. Wear something comfortable you can move around in. That’s genuinely the extent of the prep required!

We’re located at 8360 East Raintree Drive, #110, Scottsdale, just a couple of minutes off the 101 at the Raintree exit. Live Drop-In Classes run every Wednesday from 6–8 pm. If you’d rather ease in first, our Online Zoom Class runs every Tuesday, 6–7:30 pm, and works exactly the same way from your living room!

When you arrive

You’ll be welcomed in by Joe Hammer, our founder and director, along with the rest of the students. Every class opens with warm-up games. These aren’t tests, they’re just designed to get everyone loose – “out of their head,” laughing, and thinking a little less about how they look and a little more about what’s happening in front of them.

The middle of class

This is where most of the actual learning happens… we break into short scene work, listening exercises, and games built around a specific improv principle (accepting an offer, building a character, staying present with a partner). Joe walks through each exercise before it starts, so you’ll always know what you’re being asked to do… the games are simple and the instructions are given clearly every time.

You will not be put on the spot without warning. You won’t be forced into a scene alone. Most exercises are done in pairs or small groups. Newer students are often placed with more experienced students to assist in the learning process. All of our more experienced students were once beginners like you!

Near the end

Classes typically wind down with Joe’s signature “Scene of the Night” where students enjoy a full five minute scene with Joe. By this point, most first-timers say the nervousness from the start of class has mostly faded… not because the material got easier, but because they’ve had two hours of proof that nothing bad happens when they take a risk!

After class

That’s it. No homework, no requirement to come back, no pressure. Most all students eagerly come back the following week simply because it was more fun than they expected… but there’s zero obligation either way.

Common first-timer questions

Do I need a partner or a friend to come with me?
No. Most students come alone, and classes are built around meeting new people, not attending with someone you already know.

What if I have to leave early?
Life happens… just let Joe know when you arrive.

Is this just for people who want to perform?
Not at all. Many of our regular students have no interest in ever being on a stage. They’re here for the confidence, communication, and creative outlet.
